Report: Irish church leader 'begged' Vatican to dismiss abusive priest

DUBLIN (CNS) -- A newly released chapter of the Murphy Report into the handling of clergy sex abuse allegations in the Archdiocese of Dublin between 1975 and 2004 shows Cardinal Desmond Connell "begged" Pope John Paul II to dismiss an abusive priest from the priesthood.

Chapter 19 was withheld when the report of Judge Yvonne Murphy's commission was published in November 2009 because the abuser involved -- former priest Tony Walsh -- was awaiting trial. Walsh was sentenced to 16 years in prison for abuse in early December, clearing the way for publication.

Referring to Walsh, the inquiry noted, "his pattern of behavior is such that it is likely that he has abused hundreds of children." The newly published chapter reveals that allegations of abuse made just days after Walsh's ordination in 1978 were largely ignored by church authorities and he went on to abuse freely for almost a decade, being moved him from parish to parish when fresh allegations emerged.

A VICTIM of jailed paedophile priest Tony Walsh yesterday spoke for the first time of how the depraved ex-cleric sang a song while sexually abusing him.

Niall, not his real name, told the Irish Independent he was one of hundreds of working-class children abused in Ballyfermot, Dublin, by the "most notorious child abuser" to come before the Commission of Investigation led by Judge Yvonne Murphy.

He broke his silence as Justice Minister Dermot Ahern received the Murphy Report on a litany of child abuse in the Diocese of Cloyne, Co Cork.

"I was one of the many victims you'll never hear about," Niall said yesterday.

"Seeing his face all over the newspapers last week made me feel dirty again," Niall added. "It was him. It was 'Father' Walsh. It brought back what I had shut out of my mind.

"I didn't go to work. I stayed in bed for most of the day remembering the song he used to sing as he was having his way with me. Everyone else loves that song except me, and nobody knows why."

That song was 'Too Shy' by 1980s band Kajagoogoo.

Walsh, an Elvis impersonator in a priests' singing group, sang this to encourage victims not to resist his advances.

Niall, now in his mid-30s, recalled his sexual abuse, which began in the De La Salle primary school on Ballyfermot Road in the early 1980s when he was only eight or nine.

On the pretext of hearing confessions, Walsh would come into the class, pick a boy and take him to another building.

There he walked down a school corridor to a small room which was used for prayers. He turned the latch and locked the door from the inside. The screams of boys could not be heard.

Walsh had a few "regulars". On quite a few occasions he selected Niall, whom previously outside the church after Mass he patted on the head and tickled in front of his unsuspecting parents.

It was during confession that Walsh's relationship with Niall became physical.

"He invited me to sit on his lap, saying it was cold and we should have a cuddle. He put his hands into my shirt and pants. I was too young to know about sex but I knew it was wrong."

Before letting Niall return to his class, Walsh said: "What happened between us is between God. God will be angry if you tell anyone."

On one occasion, Niall tried to break away from Walsh.

"I tried to get off his lap, but he tightened his grip and his voice was shaking.

"'Never say no to a priest,' he commanded.

"He made me take my trousers down. One hand came straight into my underwear groping my genitals and with his fingers on his other hand he invaded me from behind.

"It was just awful. I hoped it would not last too long. Thankfully, I was never fully raped, but others were."

Academically bright and working in a good job, Niall has found it difficult to relate to women.

"Walsh made sex dirty for me. I don't have what I crave -- a wife and kids," he said. "On the outside I appear normal, but inside I'm screaming with the shame and guilt of Walsh."

Looking back some 30 years, Niall questions why teachers never asked why it was the same boys Walsh picked for confessions, ignoring chubby boys.

"The teachers could have gone to the gardai with their suspicions," he said.

ARCHBISHOP DIARMUID MARTIN has said he sleeps better knowing that notorious child sex abuser Tony Walsh is in prison “and not walking the streets of Dublin”.
The archbishop of Dublin was speaking on RTE Radio1′s News at One today shortly after the chapter of the Murphy Report into clerical sex abuse in the diocese relating to ex-priest Walsh was published. The chapter had not been previously published because Walsh was in court on sex offences. When he was convicted and jailed on 17 counts of sexual abuse at the start of the month, the High Court ordered that the chapter could be published.
It contains harrowing detail of how Walsh abused serially and continually during his time as a Catholic priest. A complaint was made against him only two days after his first appointment to Ballyfermot parish in 1978, relating to the sexual abuse of an 8-year-old boy. That complaint was investigated by a Monsignor Glennon who said he believed Walsh was telling the truth and it was dropped

The 19th chapter of the Murphy Report on clerical abuse in the Dublin diocese was published today, more than a year after the release of the original report. The publication of chapter 19 was delayed because it concerned former priest Tony Walsh, who was facing legal proceedings.
Eleven days ago Walsh was sentenced to 16 years in jail, clearing the way for chapter 19 to be made available to the public. I had recently begun to wonder if people on this island could become desensitised to the scale and severity of clerical sexual abuse. But Chapter 19 makes for still more harrowing reading; to the point that the Murphy Commission describes Walsh as the “most notorious child sexual abuser” it encountered. That’s saying something.
People already had a sense of Walsh’s crimes due to extensive media coverage of the court proceedings, including a particularly disturbing depiction of his abuse written by Patsy McGarry in last week’s Irish Times.

All that is necessary for the triumph of evil is that good men do nothing. And that is what happened with child abuse in this country and especially, on the basis of the latest chapter of the Murphy Commission, in the Dublin archdiocese. Only it was worse.

They not alone looked the other way, they passed the buck. They avoided responsibility. They allowed innocent, decent children to be raped and put in unimaginable peril. Evil flourished. Let there be no doubt about that.

Tony Walsh’s abuse of one boy from 1978 to 1983 was so extreme that he was sentenced this week to a total of 123 years. On Wednesday the High Court is expected to release an unpublished Murphy report chapter dealing with Walsh. It contains shocking material

THE EXTENT OF Tony Walsh’s abuse of one young boy over the five years from 1978 to 1983, when the child, “David”, was aged between seven and 12, can be gleaned from the sentences imposed by Judge Frank O’Donnell in the Circuit Criminal Court last Monday: a total of 123 years.

Five of the 13 counts, for buggery, attracted sentences of 10, 12, 14, 16 and 16 years each. The remaining counts, for indecent assault, brought sentences ranging from four to nine years. As Walsh is to serve his sentences concurrently, 16 years is the maximum time he will spend in jail. It is the most severe sentence ever imposed on a clerical child sex abuser in the State. (Four years were suspended, as a psychologist’s report said it was unlikely Walsh would offend again.) With good behaviour Walsh could be out of jail in 2019.

TONY Walsh was once a popular priest, a Fr Trendy of his time.

Gyrating during Elvis Presley imitations with the All Priests Show, the 56-year-old was a big hit in parishes in the Ballyfermot-Cherry Orchard area of Dublin.

But away from the stage act, he was one of the most notorious clerical sex abusers, who raped and sodomised dozens of young boys in the 1970s-1990s.

In 1992, with allegations against Walsh on the increase, Archbishop Desmond Connell set up a tribunal to investigate him which eventually recommended that he be defrocked.

But Connell kept its findings secret.

THE BAD, the ugly and, somewhat surprisingly, the good – or at least what passed for good in the morally bankrupt culture of the Archdiocese of Dublin at the time – are all to be found in the tale of Tony Walsh, one of the most notorious of the city’s paedophile priests, convicted yesterday for his repeated rape of one small boy and his sexual assaults on two others during the 1970s and 1980s. He is the subject of the missing chapter 19 of the Murphy report, redacted so as to not prejudice the trial which concluded yesterday.

To glean some insight into the enormous damage done by this priest, it is worth remembering again what the victim called “David” had to say on the RTÉ Prime Time programme Cardinal Secrets in 2002:

“When I have a dream, I am basically being raped again and again and again and I could not under any circumstances overstress the word ‘raped’. I am being raped in my sleep. It mightn’t happen every night of the week but it happens at least two or three times a week and I just don’t sleep because I just, the minute I close my eyes and get back into the sleep I’m getting raped again so I stay awake and I . . . What they do, they give me drugs to put me to sleep, or I take a bottle of whiskey if I don’t want to go near the doctor.”

FR TONY Walsh was best-known for his Elvis act as part of the All-Priests Show, a groin-thrusting, hip-shaking performance. It was good-humoured, light entertainment in the parish halls of the late 1970s and early 1980s.

But for three boys, whose childhoods were destroyed over three decades ago, it had the most horrible connotations.

Yesterday, former priest Tony Walsh (57) was jailed for 16 years for abusing three young altar boys in Ballyfermot, Dublin. One of the boys was repeatedly raped over several years between the age of seven and 12; and he indecently assaulted the two other boys.

COURT REPORT: A FORMER Dublin priest who was previously jailed for sexually abusing six boys has been sentenced to 16 years, with four suspended, for abusing a further three victims.

Court to decide on Murphy report chapter

THE HIGH Court will this morning consider publishing chapter 19 of the Murphy report following the jailing yesterday of former priest Tony Walsh for 16 years, four suspended, for the sexual abuse of three boys.

On October 15th, 2009, Mr Justice Paul Gilligan of the High Court ruled chapter 19, which deals with abuse by Tony Walsh, and 21 other references to him, should not be published pending the outcome of three court cases then pending.

The Murphy report investigated how clerical child sex abuse allegations involving 46 priests in Dublin’s Catholic archdiocese were handled by church and State authorities between 1975 and 2004. Chapters 19 and 20 of the report were withheld when it was published on November 26th, 2009, pending the outcome of proceedings involving Walsh and another man. Proceedings in the other case are ongoing.

At the age of 12 – after five years of being molested and raped – David first realised what was happening to him was wrong.

An altar boy in Ballyfermot, David was just seven when he first met Tony Walsh. The cleric was well known as an Elvis impersonator and part of the All Priests Show.

Having ingratiated himself with David’s family, Walsh brought the boy back to the parochial home on a regular basis. He would play Elvis records for him or help him with homework. Then the abuse started.

Tony Walsh, a former priest of the Archdiocese of Dublin, was sentenced today for the grievous sexual abuse of three people when they were still only children. My first thoughts go to these victims and their families. I hope that the finality of the legal process will help bring them some sense of justice, of healing, of closure and hope for the future.

Tony Walsh, however, abused many more children, the numbers are truly shocking. For some of these he has already served sentence. He caused untold destruction in the lives of numerous children.

Today’s news will sadly have reignited the ordeal of many of his victims.

A VICTIM of defrocked priest Tony Walsh yesterday described the life sentence he had imposed on him following years of sexual abuse when he was an altar boy.

Walsh, who received a 12-year jail term for abusing three boys, now in their 30s, sat impassively as one of his victims told the Circuit Criminal Court in Dublin that he smoked crack cocaine and became a heroin addict as a direct result of being abused by Walsh.

Judge Frank O'Donnell described the now 38-year-old as an "absolute stalwart" after he read out a harrowing victim impact statement in which the victim disclosed that he had first tried to commit suicide at the age of 16.
