Why is the Vatican rushing the beatification of a pope who oversaw its worst scandal in centuries?

When Pope John Paul II is beatified on May 1 before an audience of hundreds of thousands in St. Peter’s Square, the event will mark a new land-speed record for arrival at the final stage before sainthood, beating Mother Teresa’s previous mark by 15 days. Some have objected to the haste, particularly given persistent questions about John Paul’s handling of the sexual-abuse crisis in the Catholic Church. Yet if the child is father to the man, this is a clear case of the pope being father to the saint.

John Paul notoriously presided over what wags called a “saint-making factory” during his almost 27 years atop the Catholic Church. He produced more beatifications (1,338) and canonizations (482) than all previous popes combined—and since Catholic tradition acknowledges 263 previous popes stretching back nearly 2,000 years, that’s no mean feat.

This avalanche of halos was the result of a deliberate policy. In 1983, John Paul overhauled the sainthood process to make it quicker, cheaper, and less adversarial, eliminating the office of “Devil’s advocate” and dropping the required number of miracles. His aim was to lift up contemporary role models of holiness in order to show a jaded secular world that sanctity is alive in the here and now.

A substantial share of John Paul’s picks lived in the 20th century, from Padre Pio to Mother Teresa to Josemaría Escrivá, the founder of Opus Dei. In that sense, John Paul’s fast-track beatification is a natural byproduct of his own policies, which have been largely upheld by his successor and erstwhile right-hand man, Pope Benedict XVI.

Yet John Paul’s cause is also a reminder, at least for some, of why waiting a little while isn’t always such a bad thing.

In theory, sainthood is supposed to be a democratic process, beginning with a popular grassroots sentiment that a given figure was a saint. Six years ago, the evidence of that conviction vis-à-vis Karol Wojtyla, the given name of John Paul II, seemed like a slam-dunk.

This was, after all, the pope who brought down communism, who was seen in the flesh by more people than any other figure in human history, who reinvigorated Catholicism after a period of doubt and confusion, and who gave rise to an entire “John Paul II” generation of young priests and bishops eager to take the church’s message to the street.

Crowds chanted “Santo subito!”—“Sainthood now!”—at his funeral mass. The cardinals who gathered to elect the next pope signed a petition asking whoever it might be to waive the normal five-year waiting period to launch a cause, which Benedict XVI swiftly did. Adulatory coverage in the global media amounted to a sort of secular canonization, making the formal ecclesiastical process seem almost anticlimactic.

Today, however, that enthusiasm has been tempered by revelations about the role of the late pope and his aides in the sexual-abuse crisis—by any reckoning, the most destructive Catholic scandal in centuries, and one that critics say metastasized on John Paul’s watch.

The signature case is that of the late Mexican priest Father Marcial Maciel Degollado, founder of the controversial conservative religious order the Legionaries of Christ. John Paul II was a great patron of Maciel, admiring the religious order’s unapologetic fidelity to Catholic teaching, its loyalty to Rome and the papacy, and its success in generating vocations among younger Catholics.

Yet in the mid-1990s, charges began to surface that Maciel’s public face concealed a deeply flawed private life. A complaint was filed in Rome with the office headed by then-cardinal Joseph Ratzinger, today Pope Benedict, alleging that Maciel had sexually abused a number of former members of the order. That case was tabled until late 2001, and no action was taken until after John Paul’s death.

Even when Ratzinger’s staff began to become convinced there was fire behind the smoke, other senior figures in John Paul’s regime gave Maciel aid and comfort. Maciel accompanied John Paul II on several foreign voyages and was extolled by top church officials as a role model for his work with youth. At one stage, the most powerful department in the Vatican, the Secretariat of State, denied there was any case against Maciel, at the very moment Ratzinger’s office was reaching the conclusion that Maciel was indeed guilty.

Under the new pope, the dam broke. In May 2006 Benedict XVI ordered Maciel to withdraw to a life of “prayer and penance,” and the Legionaries acknowledged his responsibility for a wide range of abuses and acts of misconduct, including that he fathered children out of wedlock with at least two women with whom he maintained relationships.

In the eyes of critics, the Maciel case illustrates a pattern of denial and obstruction of justice on sex abuse during the John Paul years. In cases where local bishops attempted to formally expel abusers from the priesthood, in a process known as “laicization,” Rome often counseled caution. Vatican authorities until very recently turned a blind eye to “mandatory reporter” policies that would have obligated bishops to report these crimes to police and civil prosecutors.

The extent to which that pattern has been reversed under Benedict XVI may be open to debate, but that it largely describes what happened under John Paul is, by now, a matter of record.

Those inclined to give John Paul the benefit of the doubt argue that the church has been on a learning curve and it’s unfair to judge him by today’s standards. Further, they say, by the time the American scandals erupted and Maciel’s guilt became clear, the late pope was already well into his twilight. His primary contribution to combating the scourge of clerical abuse, they argue, was inspiring a new generation of dedicated and holy priests, men who take their duty of standing “in the person of Christ” seriously, and who are therefore less likely to dishonor their vows.

Whatever one makes of those arguments, the Vatican denies that declaring a saint is tantamount to ratifying all the policy choices of his pontificate. When the 19th-century Pope Pius IX was beatified in 2000, for instance, Vatican officials took pains to say it was not an endorsement of his Jewish policy, which famously included forcing the Jews of Rome back into their ghetto and refusing to return a Jewish child to his parents after he had been secretly baptized.

Sainthood, these officials say, means that despite whatever failures of judgment and foresight marred a pope’s reign, he was nevertheless personally a holy man. Certainly few seriously question John Paul II’s rich personal prayer life, his strong mystical streak, or his deep and abiding faith.

Of course, Vatican spin no longer carries the weight it once did, and in many quarters critics will still see the beatification as an attempt to whitewash John Paul’s record on the crisis. One test of how concerned the Vatican is about that reaction may come in whether John Paul II remains on the fast track, moving to the final step of canonization in record time, or whether the case for caution prevails.

The pilgrims and devotees who will throng St. Peter’s Square on May 1 will doubtless be grateful for a chance to recapture some of that old John Paul II magic. Others, however, will wonder if this is a case in which the Vatican’s legendary penchant for thinking in centuries would serve it better.

This book was born from the effort of a common person to be acquainted with an organism which has in the secrecy one of its most outstanding characteristics: the Opus Dei, or The Work. This work presents itself as a valuable instrument for the understanding of this phenomenon embedded in the Catholic Church.

Knowledge is certainly the most efficient instrument in the combat of indoctrination. And, as the title announces, the goal of this book is to alert families about the insidious way Opus Dei filters through them, in order to take their children away afterwards.

The reading of this book is extremely useful not only for Catholic families, because this organization can attack anyone, Catholic or not. Once it gets close to people who they want to co-opt, the members do not even explain their true objectives or their actual practices. Therefore, the publication of Opus Dei addresses, companies, schools and entities linked to it, is something of very high value, since parents have now the possibility to know that the place their children are attending is not only a “kids’ club”, or a simple catechism class, or free tutoring classes, but, mostly, a recruitment center for young persons from an extremely reactionary Catholic entity.

A parish priest near Genoa is facing pedophilia and drug charges just as the Vatican lays out new guidelines for responding to sex abuse cases. Genoa’s Cardinal Angelo Bagnasco, who was integral to establishing the new guidelines, has visited the local church hit by the case.

GENOA - The latest sex abuse case to rock the Catholic Church is unfolding in the archdiocese of an influential Italian Cardinal, who has been working with Pope Benedict XVI on reforms to respond to prior scandals of pedophile priests.

Father Riccardo Seppia, a 51 year-old parish priest in the village of Sastri Ponente, near Genoa, was arrested last Friday on pedophilia and drugs charges. Investigators say that in tapped mobile phone conversations Seppia asked a Moroccan drug dealer to arrange sexual encounters with young and vulnerable boys. “I do not want 16-year-old boys, but younger. Fourteen-year-olds are OK. Look for needy boys, who have family issues,” he allegedly said.

Genoa Archbishop Angelo Bagnasco, who is also head of the Italian Bishops Conference, had been working with Benedict to establish a tough new worldwide policy released this week on how bishops should handle accusations of priestly sex abuse.

Bagnasco said when he met the Pope this weekend he “asked for a particular blessing for my archdiocese,” in light of the accused crimes, adding that “like every father toward a son (feels) great pain in seeing a priest who is not faithful to his vocation.”

New report on Irish Catholic Church reveals further untold horrors

Donegal diocese reports hundreds of children were sexually abused by 20 pedophiles

A new report on the Donegal diocese of Raphoe will reveal that 20 pedophile priests sexually abused hundreds of children over a 40 years period. This report will detail another massive cover-up scandal within the Irish Catholic Church.

The report, carried out for the National Board for Safeguarding Children in the Catholic Church, will be published by the Bishop of Raphoe, Dr Philip Boyce, during the next two weeks.

The report will outline the horrors of the allegations against the priests and how senior colleagues failed the victims.

A source told the Irish Independent “There were hundreds and hundreds of victims…and they were abused again and again while the church actively prevented investigations by the civil authorities.

"The Raphoe diocese, like others, was only interested in protecting the church and not the victims"

One of the victims, who was raped by a priest, said "I cannot begin to tell you how much I am looking forward to seeing this audit being published. It will be like a dark cloud lifting off me.

"The cover-up by the church in Rome and here in Ireland is finally being exposed. I have no doubt Dr Boyce will apologize to people like me, but what we want is the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth."

Another victim said that all involved in the cover up should be punished. They said “In every walk of life, someone who covers up a crime or who prevents a criminal from being brought to justice is arrested and charged with helping an offender or perverting the course of justice.”

In one case, in 1977, an offending priest was sent away from his parish for just one month after a young boy’s parents had made a complaint to the Church. The family were distraught when he returned as they had been told by the Church that the issue had been “dealt with”.

Over 30 years this priest was shuffled from parish to parish and he continued to target young boys. The Church never informed the police of these complaints.

According to this source when the police were involved in investigations about the treatment of these children the Church was uncooperative. Although some internal investigations within the diocese did take place the investigators found no records of the abuse whatsoever.
In another case the parents of a victim, who had complained, were asked by a senior cleric, if the family were “all right” financially.

The audit was led by Ian Elliott chief executive of the National Board for Safeguarding Children in the Catholic Church. A spokesperson from his office said the reports examined the full extent of all complaints or allegations, knowledge, suspicions or concerns of child sexual abuse, made to the Raphoe diocese by individuals or by the civil authorities in the period 1 January 1975 to the present day, against Catholic clergy.”

When the terrified teen finally mustered enough courage to report the ongoing sexual abuse Father Barry inflicted on him, the priest he confided in shut the door in his face, flicked off the porch light and left him standing in darkness.

It had taken 15-year-old Richard Corbett a year to finally find the strength to tell his mom about what Windsor priest Barry Glendinning was doing to him. She dragged him down to the rectory.

“She was awful mad,” Corbett said during questioning for his civil lawsuit, which was launched four decades after the abuse. “We talked to Father Nouvion and basically he told us just to go home and pray. He turned the porch light off. Shut the door.”

Corbett was likely the first victim of pedophile priest Barry Glendinning to come forward and report his abuse to the church. The diocese shuffled the priest out of town and set him up at a new church. That was 1965.

Glendinning would spend the next few decades abusing children from London to Edmonton, as diocese officials quickly and quietly shuffled him out of town each time there was a complaint.

It was a pattern repeated with other priests that would lead to dozens of lawsuits and victims, lawyers and judges accusing the diocese of cover ups and “wilful blindness.”

Glendinning is one of at least 22 priests in the London diocese who have been convicted, charged or sued for sex crimes against children.

Experts and abuse survivors say because pedophiles often prey on multiple children, the number of victims is likely much higher, possibly in the hundreds.

“For all the victims who do come forward, so many others remain shrouded in silence and/or guilt and shame,” said Irene Deschenes, one of the first victims to accused Rev. Charles Sylvestre, the notorious Windsor priest who assaulted dozens of children over four decades and sparked a major overhaul of the diocese’s approach to sexual abuse.

“Very rarely does one predator have only one victim,” said Deschenes. “That the diocese of London has had 22 priests convicted, charged or sued for abusing children means there are hundreds of hurting and lost souls out there. And countless others experiencing that pain today.”

Three London diocese clergymen have been kicked out of the priesthood for sex abuse crimes — a move previously unheard of in Canada.

Konstanty Przybylski, Barry Glendinning and John Harper were defrocked after a series of highly publicized sex abuse scandals.

Bishop Ronald Fabbro said the laicizations, the church’s formal term for defrocking, which must be approved by the Vatican, have become a central part of widespread change at the diocese which includes replacing the sex abuse policy that came out in 1989.

One change the diocese has made is to believe victims when they come forward, which Fabbro admits was “a problem in the past.”

Glendinning was ordained May 21, 1964, and sent the following month to Our Lady of Guadalupe Parish in Windsor. He befriended Corbett, a young member of the flock, and groomed him for sexual abuse while counselling him through the death of his dad.

Glendinning liked to befriend families with widowed mothers or those with lots of boys. When police arrested him at the London seminary in 1974 and searched his room, they found more than 250 colour photographs of 30 different young boys, undressed and engaged in various sex acts. According to court documents, they also seized a pellet gun and artificial breasts.

In 1974, Glendinning was convicted of six counts of gross indecency against five boys and one girl. His punishment was three years probation. The probation order, dated May 14, 1974, stated he was not allowed to work with children.

But the order was too little too late for brothers John, Guy and Ed Swales, who met Glendinning in 1969 at a camp for underprivledged children.

The Swales family struggled with money. They fell behind paying the bills. There was no money for movies or vacations.

Glendinning filled in the gaps. He bought the kids pizza and took them to the movies. They went fishing and camping. Often, the trips were overnight.

“One of my younger brothers is named after him,” said John Swales, now 52. “He used to come to our house for dinner. He was a constant person in our lives.”

Over the next four years, Glendinning became like an older brother to John in particular. He taught the boys about life and counselled them with their troubles.

He also introduced them to tobacco and alcohol — forming the start of a booze and drug addiction that would plague them into adulthood — and subjected them to relentless sexual abuse.

It was at the seminary and on camping trips that — as a London judge would later put it — Glendinning schooled the boys in “sexual perversion.”

Body oiling and painting. Masturbation and genital fondling. Oral sex. He also took pictures of the boys and ordered them to take pictures of him.

Each visit to his apartment, every camping trip, meant more sexual degradation for the troubled boys at the hands of their trusted priest. Even their little sister Melody’s complaint to another priest didn’t stop it.

It was late spring 1973. Like they often did, the Swales boys were spending time at St. Peter’s Seminary with Glendinning. It was one of the rare times Melody was with them.

The children were playing outside. The spring weather made things muddy.

Glendinning took them inside. He told the girl to wash her feet, lie down on his bed and have a nap. Her brothers all went to have showers.

The girl later heard her brother Ed crying in the next room. She climbed off the bed and opened the door. Her brothers and Glendinning were all there. All naked. The priest was on his knees.

“He was putting baby powder, rubbing it on my brothers and they were naked, and I knew this wasn’t right, but I wasn’t understanding why,” she said in 2000 while testifying in an examination for her brothers’ lawsuit.

Glendinning got angry. He told her she was a bad girl and ordered her back to his room.

Months later the confused girl told Father Hunter, a priest at her school, what she saw.

He was furious — at her.

He grabbed her by the arm, pulled her out of the classroom and told her she was bad. She was warned: if she talked about it again, she’d go to hell.

“He said ‘that never happened, that was a lie and I don’t want to hear you talk about that,’” Melody recalled.

The Swales brothers weren’t the only victims.

“It is undisputed that Glendinning was and is a pedophile, and was, at least between 1969 and 1974, a very promiscuous one,” Superior Court Justice. J. G. Kerr wrote in 2004 in a $1.4 million judgment against the London diocese.

A victim, referred to as T.L. in court documents, said Glendinning abused him between 1967 and 1969. It was similar to that endured by the Swales brothers.

He swore during the Swales civil trial that he was regularly seen by other residents at the seminary, and was asked by one of them to keep quiet.

Another victim also swore he was repeatedly brought to Glendinning’s for overnight stays and sexual abuse between 1969 and 1971. He said the priest never tried to conceal his presence, even though it was against the rules for children to stay at the seminary.

Justice Kerr came to the “inescapable conclusion” that the diocese “encouraged secrecy, if not wilful blindness on the part of its priests with respect to sexual deviance.”

“It was an environment in which one heard no evil, saw no evil and spoke no evil,” he wrote. “The diocese thus created and nurtured an environment in which Glendinning was free to carry on his sexual predation without fear of discovery.”

A Safe Environment Policy for the diocese of London and the Code of Conduct for Ordained Priests — which among other things directs priests to avoid one-on-one meetings with minors — was published in 2008.

“I think it’s accurate to say we did it because of the Father Sylvestre thing,” Fabbro said.

“We knew that we had to do something. Our policy going back to 1989 needed to be reviewed in any case, and this was the reason I think that we did so.”

Sylvestre was convicted in 2006 of 47 counts of indecent assault on girls over four decades. Dozens more victims have since come forward. He died in prison in 2007 at age 84.

Canon law makes it impossible to defrock a dead man, so he remains a priest in the history books.

For many, the effort to defrock him was too little too late anyway.

“My faith is gone,” said Lou Ann Soontiens, who had a forced abortion following years of abuse by Sylvestre. “I don’t care now. Whatever happens, happens. It doesn’t bother me that he wasn’t. I’m just glad he’s dead. He can’t hurt anybody else.”

Rev. John Sharp, vicar general of the diocese, said the diocese has faced more than 100 sex abuse lawsuits. Sylvestre victims alone have launched 78 cases. At last count, 71 of those had been settled.

Sharp said he didn’t know what all the lawsuits have cost the diocese. (LET’S ADD UP THE FIGURES WE DO HAVE, AT LEAST)

“We actually haven’t come to the point of calculating that,” said Sharp. “We’re still in the midst of doing it. We still have a number of lawsuits to settle.”

He said the church has insurance, but it doesn’t cover everything. The diocese has had to make up the difference.

“It’s had a profound effect on us in the sense that we’ve had to sell a number of our assets and properties,” said Sharp. “Obviously those moneys are moneys that could not have been used for development of various other pastoral ministries and programs.”

Sharp said the diocese has sold a number of “excess properties,” including the bishop’s cottage and the bishop’s residence, but no churches.

“Churches themselves are not sold off to fund sexual abuse (settlements),” said Sharp.

London lawyer Rob Talach with the firm Ledroit Beckett, which has launched the bulk of those lawsuits, said he was astounded that 22 pedophile priests have operated in the local diocese.

“And if you’d asked me this last year, the number would have been less,” he said. “So the question is, what’s the number going to be next year?

“It’s important to note it’s 22 known priests. How many slip under the radar? How many are never known? How many are active right now?”

More dismaying, he said, is the potential number of victims who remain under the radar.

“Sylvestre is pushing 100,” said Talach. “So when you take 22 perpetrators — especially considering how the diocese typically dealt with these guys by moving them to a fresh crop every time they got caught — the numbers here could be crazy.”

Talach said Sylvestre might have been an “anomaly,” but the victim count still adds up quickly.

“Let’s say each perp has 10 victims over the course of their career or lifetime,” he said. “It’s clear the victim count from this problem in this diocese is in the hundreds. And you factor in Sylvestre and Harper and Glendinning and guys that were multi-digit, you’re easily talking in excess of 300.”


Twenty-two London diocese priests have been convicted, charged or sued for sexual abuse:


1. Rev. Barry Glendinning. In May 1974 Glendinning pleaded guilty to six counts of gross indecency involving children. He was given a suspended sentence and three years probation. He was also sued in 2006 for abuse at Our Lady of Guadalope parish in Windsor.

2. Rev. Robert Morrissey. In February 1993 he was sentenced to 18 months probation for attempted buggery, indecent assault and assault.

3. Rev. Michael Francis White. In January 1994 he pleaded guilty to one count of indecent assault against a young girl. He was given 18 months probation.

4. Rev. Gary Roy. In February 1998 he pleaded guilty to two counts of indecent assault against boys. He was sentenced to four months in jail.

5. Rev. John Stock. He pleaded guilty in January 1999 to gross indecency against a young boy and was sentenced to 12 months.

6. Rev. Cameron MacLean. In February 2001 he was sentenced to two years less a day after pleading guilty to indecent assault and sexual assault of young boys. In 2002 he pleaded guilty to nine charges of sexual assault for abusing eight boys, three in Windsor, in the 1970s and 1980s.

7. Rev. Thomas Cromien. In June 2001 he pleaded guilty to indecent assault of a teenage boy. He was sentenced to two years less a day.

8. Rev. Richard Boll. He was sentenced to two years in prison in November 2001 after pleading guilty to gross indecency, indecent assault and sexual assault against boys. At the time of his arrest, Boll was the bishop’s adviser on canon law.

9. Rev. John Harper got three years probation in March 2003 after he pleaded guilty to indecent assault involving minors in Windsor in the 1960s.

10. Rev. Konstanty ‘Konnie’ Przybylski. On July 4, 2006, he was sentenced to five years in prison after pleading guilty to sexual assault and sexual exploitation of two teenage boys in the Port Dover area.

11. Rev. Charles Sylvestre. (Deceased) He pleaded guilty on Aug. 3, 2006, to 47 counts of indecent assault and was sentenced in October to three years in prison. The majority of his crimes took place in Chatham while he was pastor of St. Ursula’s parish.

12. Rev. Godwin Scerri. In April 2010, the OPP resurrected the case against Scerri who was charged in June 1993 for sexually abusing minors between 1983 and 1987 when he served at St. William’s Church in Emeryville. He fled to his native Malta. The search warrant remains open in Canada.

13. Rev. Leo Charron. The retired Belle River priest pleaded guilty in September 1993 to indecent assault and gross indecency against a boy who was 12 when the abuse began. Charron was pastor of St. Jerome’s Church in Windsor.

14. Rev. John Duarte. The former head of a Haitian mission pleaded guilty in April 2010 to sexual abusing adolescent boys there. He was sentenced to up to eight months in prison. During the 1990s Duarte served as a parish priest in Windsor and Essex County.

15. Rev. Laurent C. Paquette. (Deceased) Lawsuit issued in January 2008 alleges sexual abuse was perpetrated while Paquette was a priest at St. Gregory Parish and chaplain at St. Gregory School in St. Clair Beach.

16. Rev. William Ring (Deceased). Lawsuit issued in November 2006 alleging sexual abuse while Ring was a priest at St. Paul’s Catholic Church in Thamesville.

17. Rev. William Hodgson ‘Hod’ Marshall. On June 10, Marshall was led away in handcuffs to begin serving a two-year sentence stemming from abuse of students in all-male Catholic high schools in Windsor, Sudbury and Toronto from 1952 to 1985.

18. Rev. Douglas Mercer. A lawsuit was filed in November 2009 alleging sexual abuse while Mercer was a priest at St. Thomas the Apostle Parish in Windsor.

19. Rev. Michael Fallona. A lawsuit was filed in November 2009 alleging sexual abuse in the summer of 1977 while Fallona was a priest at St. Vincent de Paul Parish in Windsor.

20. Rev. Bernard Alphonse Robert. A lawsuit is pending regarding allegations of sexual abuse in the 1970s while Robert was a priest of St. Francis Xavier Parish in Tilbury.

21. Rev. Piotr Sanczenko. Is charged with sexual assault involving two victims at Our Lady of Victory Church in Chatham from 1963 to 1973. The case is pending.

22. Rev. Gabriele Del Bianco is charged criminally with sexual assault. His criminal prosecution is ongoing. He has also been sued by 10 alleged victims of sex abuse. The majority of his parish work was in Wallaceburg and Windsor.

WHILE THE FAITHFUL and holy gather in the Cathedral Basilica of Saints Peter and Paul, Art Baselice stands outside, bearing witness in his own way. He isn’t interested in prayers for Bishop Joseph Cistone, who is leaving Philadelphia to run a diocese in Michigan. He isn’t hoping to shake hands with the cardinal and all of the archbishops, who have come together on this summer afternoon for Cistone’s farewell benediction.

Surrounded by a handful of priest abuse victims and their advocates, he holds a sandwich-board sign bearing photos of his son, Arthur Baselice III, and two clerics, Brother Regis Howitz and Father Charles Newman. As a pair of clergymen head into the service, Baselice raises up his billboard. They look over for a moment, then move on. “See what I get?” Art says. “There’s a man of God. He turns his head.”

Back home in South Jersey, the ashes of Art Baselice’s son sit in a marble urn, surrounded by trinkets and photographs, as if part of a funeral that never ends. The man Art holds responsible is Father Charles, the former president of Archbishop Ryan, the largest Catholic high school in the city. With his wife and two children, Art would attend Saturday mass, and walk up the aisle to Father Charles, who would place the Holy Eucharist in their outstretched hands or on their tongues. Art is mostly bald now, and stocky, with the meaty hands of a prizefighter. He rarely smiles, and when he speaks, there’s an edge to his words, like he’s spitting them out — partly the South Philadelphia Italian in him, partly the ex-city cop. But his sharp cadence is mostly a reflection of what he can’t stop thinking about. “He started grooming Arthur the day he met him,” Art says of Father Charles. “Not only Arthur. He groomed us.”

That Father Charles was sent to prison in May for stealing more than $900,000 from his religious order and high school gives Art little comfort. In his mind, there are crimes for which the priest, and the Philadelphia archdiocese, haven’t been punished. His son is dead. So is his faith. As Bishop Cistone and his holy brethren worship inside the cathedral, Art tightens his grip on his sign, trying to make sense of how he — the ex-cop, the devout Catholic, the father — ended up here, and when his healing will begin.

This isn’t a story like so many that have surfaced since 2002, when the Boston Globe’s reports on Catholic clergy abuse tore apart that city’s archdiocese. Since then, tales of pedophile priests have been told by the hundreds, as other cities, including Philadelphia, began to examine the church in a way they once dared not. In 2005, a grand jury investigation launched by district attorney Lynne Abraham culminated in a 418-page report. The revelations it contained were horrifying. One priest molested a fifth-grader inside a confessional booth. Another raped an 11-year-old, then took her to a clinic for an abortion. Sixty-three priests were named in all, and the scores of children they violated would grow up battling addiction, suicidal thoughts and mental illness. But there is another group of victims and survivors — the families whose lives were ruined by depraved men cloaked in priests’ vestments.

Art and Elaine Baselice are among the forgotten collateral damage from Philadelphia’s clergy-abuse scandal. In the early 1970s, the Baselices were like a South Philly fairy tale, two young Catholic kids in love. Art, a Bishop Neumann grad who served in the Air Force, married Elaine, a pretty Maria Goretti alum from the neighborhood. Despite the cost of Catholic education, their kids, Arthur and Ashleigh, would grow up the same way they had, with the discipline and moral guidance of the church. Fortunately, Archbishop Ryan High was less than a mile away from their new home in the Northeast.


Arthur Baselice didn’t stand out among the rest of his freshman class when he arrived at Ryan in 1992. He wasn’t a straight-A student, nor a delinquent, partly thanks to the discipline at home from his father, who had worked hard years in homicide and narcotics. Arthur loved rock music and sports, especially football, playing tight end at Ryan. Still, he was more of a goofball than a macho jock, always quick to crack jokes and laugh. He didn’t seem destined for Princeton or the NFL, but Arthur’s parents were proud. He was a good kid.

Elaine Baselice first met Father Charles at Ryan’s annual mother/son dance during Arthur’s freshman year. The priest approached her and asked if she was Arthur’s mother. “What a fine-looking son you have,” Father Charles said. It was a strange introduction, but dressed in his brown friar robes, with glasses and a round, soft face crowned by thinning hair, he certainly looked harmless enough.

Father Charles wasn’t a typical priest, though. He’d joined Ryan’s staff in 1978 as a lay teacher in the English department. There, he was drawn to the spirituality of the Franciscans, who lived at the friary on Ryan’s campus and worked at the high school as teachers and administrators. Newman left to join the seminary, and when he returned in 1985, in his mid-30s, he had become Father Charles.

As an adviser for the school theater group and chorus, Father Charles was a talented organist and well-liked. In the hallways, though, he was a disciplinarian. It was his business-like manner, not any schmoozing with the archdiocesan elite, that would ultimately lead to his promotion to principal. He was also appointed treasurer of the friary — not an important job, it seemed, for priests who’d taken vows of poverty, as the Franciscans do.

In his private life, Father Charles was more likely to stay in his bedroom than have a beer at the friary’s Friday happy hours. One friend of his, Brother Regis Howitz, was a custodian at the school. Otherwise, Father Charles didn’t have an obvious social circle. Like a method actor who was always “on,” he maintained a holy aura at all times and was rarely seen wearing anything but his habit. Father Charles seemed to be a man who fully understood the power of the priesthood. So when he began calling Arthur Baselice into closed-door meetings, no one thought to question him about it.

FATHER CHARLES WAS promoted to principal before Arthur’s sophomore year, and though Arthur wasn’t in his class, and wasn’t an actor or a singer, something drew the priest to the boy. In the hallways, Father Charles would call him “Elvis,” a playful reference to Arthur’s sideburns. He summoned Arthur to his office and adjusted his grades to spare him from summer school. The priests at Ryan were revered, and Arthur thought the most respected of them all, his principal, was also becoming his friend.

Arthur later detailed his experience in a court complaint he filed against the archdiocese, as well as in statements to investigators and letters. By his junior year, he was seeing Father Charles every week, first in common rooms at the friary, then upstairs in his bedroom. While Arthur wore the priest’s black socks, Father Newman would sniff his feet and masturbate. In return, he would give Arthur alcohol and $200. After a few months passed, Father Charles pushed his victim further, performing oral sex on him while Arthur wore his socks. Drugs followed, with the priest’s bribes escalating from booze to pot, cocaine and OxyContin. Father Charles made Arthur urinate on him. According to Arthur’s complaint, Brother Regis also abused Arthur — sometimes in the presence of his friend, Father Charles, and other times alone.

Silence, it seemed to Arthur, was his only option. Along with the shame and confusion he felt, there was Father Charles’s warning: If Arthur ever spoke of what happened between them, the priest would kill himself. But as the rituals continued in secrecy, Arthur’s parents began to notice changes in their son. His grades fell. His cheerful attitude soured. He was spending more time with his girlfriend, Noelle Millar, after school. The summer after his junior year, Arthur made a stunning announcement — Noelle was pregnant. Angry and desperate to straighten out their son, the Baselices threw him out of their house and withdrew him from Ryan. Noelle’s parents took him in, and the Baselices thought Arthur was attending public school in the fall. They didn’t realize that Father Charles had told Arthur he would personally cover his tuition at Ryan.

After learning that Arthur was still at the school, his parents brought him home and agreed to let him stay at Ryan. It was a victory for the priest, in more ways than one. He kept Arthur close and drew his parents into the mythology he’d created for himself. They believed he was as concerned for Arthur’s future as they were. Why else would Father Charles visit Arthur and Noelle in the hospital after the birth of their son? Or take Arthur to Colorado for a hockey trip? He even brought Elaine a handbag after a visit to San Francisco. It made it easy to ignore the odd moments, like the time Elaine heard Father Charles say to Arthur, “See you later, stud.”

The sexual torture finally ended in 1996, when Arthur graduated and made up a story he told the priest about contracting a venereal disease. But Father Charles found another way to control his favorite pupil — with money. Arthur said that what began as casual drug use with his priest was spiraling into ­addiction, first to coke and pills, then eventually to heroin.

Arthur broke up with Noelle and over the next several years seemed to be adrift, struggling with community college, wandering from one odd job to the next. The only constant in his life was the drugs, and though Father Charles had pledged a life of poverty, he managed to fund Arthur’s habit for years with envelopes of cash, sometimes thousands at a time, and checks in Arthur’s name, one of which was for $10,800. When Arthur needed a lift to a local bar where he’d score coke, Father Charles would take him. All of that money could have sent Arthur to rehab, but what if, in his cleansing, the boy exposed his molesters? By Arthur’s account, Father Charles kept him stoned and silent.

Living on his own helped Arthur hide the depth of his addiction from his parents, who thought their son was simply partying too hard. As their concern for Arthur’s health grew, so did their suspicions about the priest. Whenever Arthur was pressed for cash, he always found work thanks to Father Charles — odd jobs around the school or friary. When the family moved to South Jersey, Father Charles came to bless their home. Why was he still so interested in their son? One evening, Art Baselice paid a visit to the friary with that mystery in mind.

Father Charles led him into a dim, wood-paneled meeting room, where the air was thick and stale. “I asked him point-blank — ‘What is your relationship with Arthur?’” Art recalls. “‘Are you giving him money?’ He would never answer my question. And because of my upbringing, the way I’ve been conditioned that a priest is a representative of God, I never pursued it.”

Art knew how to interrogate, thanks to 13 years with the Philadelphia police. This man, though, was a priest — his priest. Art had been baptized, confirmed and married by men like Father Charles. In the spiritual chain of command, Father Charles stood at the top: “It was like asking God a question, and He doesn’t answer.”

Art set aside his role as inquisitor and again became a humble congregant. As he’d done so many times before, he asked Father Charles to offer him penance.

“Bless me, Father, for I have sinned,” Art said. At the end of his confession, Father Charles said, “Say three Hail Marys for your lovely wife,” and granted him absolution.

ARTHUR AND HIS PARENTS weren’t the only ones whose faith was manipulated by Father Charles. In 2002, the priest was promoted from principal to president of Archbishop Ryan High, which put him in charge of the school’s finances and fund-raising. By now, Arthur was a full-blown heroin addict, and the priest was in the perfect position to bankroll Arthur’s self-destruction. From his first days in the new job, those who worked with Father Charles noticed unusual withdrawals and checks. Like Arthur’s parents, they were initially hesitant to doubt the priest. But after six months, three staffers reported their concerns to Stephen Pawlowski, of the archdiocese’s Office of Catholic Education. Pawlowski — a layman who was Ryan’s previous president — thought Father Charles was just handling his business differently and deserved some leeway to learn on the job. Six more months of curious activity passed before Pawlowski notified the archdiocese’s finance director of Father Charles’s suspicious transactions.

On November 24, 2003, the archdiocese announced that Father Charles had resigned from Ryan after an internal audit revealed “financial irregularities” at the school. An investigation turned up a five-figure check written to Arthur Baselice, who was then seven years removed from Ryan. A private detective working for the church contacted Arthur and asked about his connection to Father Charles. For the first time, Arthur felt compelled to release what he’d been holding inside for so long. He confessed the abuse to the detective, who in turn spoke with Art Baselice. “Your son,” he said, “needs help.”

Arthur decided to give his parents a letter he’d written years earlier but had kept to himself. The lines run together with the panicked urgency of someone who’s afraid that if he puts his pen down to consider his thoughts, he may never pick it back up again.

Dear Mom and Dad,

First of all I love both of you very much. I was going to tell both of you what set my compulsive behavior off a couple months ago but chickened out afraid of what people would think, but I can not go on living like I am and hurting the ones that love me the most. You wonder why I would rather see a shrink than go to NA or AA, that’s because I need professional help. When I was 17 … I was a desperate young man and I was taken advantage of. … I went to Father Charles for advice, and on numerous occasions he got me drunk and high and taken advantage of me at the time it seemed right I mean I did not know any better. … He is the one who started me drinking and gave me the money to buy drugs so he can have his way with me. I truly believe in my heart one hundred percent he made me the person that I am!

Across three handwritten pages, Arthur’s conflicted feelings toward Father Charles are laid bare. “I feel guilty saying something,” he wrote, “because I think he really cares about me.” On the final page, he changed course: “You always thought I liked Father Charles the truth is that I hate him.”

The Baselices already had their suspicions, but they weren’t prepared for what they were hearing from their son. The priest’s comments and behavior, all of those clues that they’d submerged over the years, suddenly became buoyant.

His parents’ anguish only deepened when Arthur moved back home in 2004. Arthur couldn’t hide the abscess on his arm, or his swollen, bloated hands, like those his father had seen on the heroin junkies he used to lock up, and in the halfway houses he still patrolled for the New Jersey parole department.

The Baselices had reached their breaking point. Determined to show the church firsthand what Father Charles had done, they dragged Arthur — colorless and gaunt, sick from withdrawal — into a tense meeting with counselors for the archdiocese. “The only thing I want is my son back the way you got him,” Art Baselice said. “You broke him. I want you to fix him.”

The counselors took detailed notes, then passed the Baselices along to the Franciscans for help. Since Father Charles wasn’t a diocesan priest, they reasoned, he wasn’t the archdiocese’s responsibility. At the Baselice kitchen table a few days later, Arthur and his father met with three Franciscans, including Father Thomas Luczak, the regional head of their order. Before Arthur told them his story, Art excused himself. He couldn’t bear to hear the details of his son’s abuse by a man he’d once shared dinner with in that same room.

The Franciscans agreed to send Arthur to rehab. Less than a week into his stay, Arthur received a $50,000 offer from Luczak in exchange for a waiver of his right to sue. Arthur returned home without signing the agreement. “You know, Dad,” Arthur said one night, “I think Newman wanted me dead. I think he was trying to get rid of me.”




THE BASELICES CONVINCED Arthur to talk to a lawyer. Civil court was their only recourse for justice, since the criminal statute of limitations had already expired; that’s also why no criminal charges were filed in the wake of the 2005 Philadelphia grand jury report about priest abuse. Charlie Gallagher, the assistant district attorney who led that investigation — and, later, the one that would send Father Charles to jail for his thefts — wasn’t sure he believed victims who waited a decade or more to come forward with their stories. The grand jury investigation changed his mind. The same patterns of abuse and cover-up that had emerged in other cities were unfolding before his eyes. “Someone coined the phrase ‘soul murder,’” says Gallagher. “These victims I dealt with — their soul was killed, their spirit was killed, their faith was killed.”

Gallagher first met Arthur Baselice after Arthur filed a civil lawsuit in June 2004. He no longer resembled the young man from his high-school football photos. The drugs had cut him down below his normal weight, and there was an emptiness behind his blue eyes, making it hard to tell whether he was seeing what was in front of him or replaying the past. A year later, a state appeals court would dismiss Arthur’s suit and 16 others, not based on merit, but because the complainants came forward too late.

Still, there seemed to be reasons for hope. On the final Wednesday of November 2006, Governor Ed Rendell expanded the state’s criminal statute of limitations for sex crimes and made other changes to the law that were a direct result of the grand jury’s recommendations. It was too late to help Arthur legally, but he seemed to have already turned a corner. After violating probation on a drug possession charge, he completed six months in court-mandated drug rehab and a halfway house. He returned home and held down a job, installing granite countertops. At 28, he was spending time with his son and staying clean. For the first time in a decade, the Baselices had their boy back.

On the night that Rendell signed the sex crimes bill, Arthur ate lasagna with his mother, gave her a kiss, and left the house for a Narcotics Anonymous meeting. Elaine didn’t know that earlier in the day, her son had called his sponsor. That old feeling was back, and it scared him. No one is sure why Arthur left NA and drove to Camden. Perhaps he was fighting the urge to kill himself, like the time he nearly jumped from a ­second-story window in a drug-fueled frenzy. Maybe, as he wrote in one of his letters, he’d had another nightmare that he was wearing black socks with Father Charles.

The next morning, a man stirred in a Camden apartment around 4th and Royden streets. He looked over at Arthur, who was on the floor, leaning back against a chair where his hooded sweatshirt, phone and keys sat. His skin was cold to the touch, and his nose and mouth were caked with a foamy fluid. Seeing that Arthur was dead, the man took a shower, called the police from a pay phone, and walked away.

That afternoon, Art Baselice answered his doorbell to find two Camden officers, their faces as grim as the news they carried. He realized his son had died in the same drug-infested neighborhood he combs on his parole beat. “That,” he says, “is what we get for being good Catholics.”




IN HIS FIFTH-FLOOR office in Center City, Bishop Joseph McFadden, who oversees Catholic education for the archdiocese, is dressed in black, bearing a cross around his neck and a look of heavy concern on his face. The only archdiocesan or Franciscan priest who agreed to speak on the record about clergy abuse and Father Charles, McFadden expresses his sadness for the Baselice family and other victims. He also points to a study that suggests there are more predators in public schools than in Catholic ones. As for what the church has learned after decades of inaction or subterfuge when predatory priests were accused, McFadden says it’s “not only a learning curve for the church. I think it’s a societal learning curve. … We have to listen clearly to children, with a much more discerning ear than before, which I think sometimes we used to dismiss. The church has learned we take this seriously now. So what did the church not do back then? We did what society did. Sometimes we didn’t pay close enough attention.”

And so, 13 years after the passing of Megan’s Law, six years after Boston’s scandal, and four years after the grand jury report that Cardinal Justin Rigali discouraged Catholics from reading, the church refuses to accept responsibility in unequivocal terms. In the wake of Father Charles’s thefts, the archdiocese sued the Franciscans, their longtime partners in faith, for damages, and accepted a $488,631 settlement. Yet it settled only a handful of claims with abuse victims after the grand jury report. No high-ranking church officials stepped down.

Instead, it’s largely business as usual. Consider Joseph Cistone, the bishop whose farewell mass Art Baselice protested this summer. The grand jury report cast him as an enabler who shielded Cardinal Anthony Bevilacqua, then head of the archdiocese, from firsthand contact with abuse allegations. Monsignor William Lynn, who is named hundreds of times in the report for his flawed investigations of accused priests, now runs a parish in Downingtown. Arthur’s parents were told the church was praying for their healing, and the archdiocese agreed to pay for Arthur’s medication before he died, as well as therapy for Elaine and Ashleigh. But the church’s lobbyists continue to block legislation that would give victims a chance to face their abusers in court.

It’s no wonder the Baselice family feels they were as much betrayed by the church as they were by Father Charles. “I don’t believe anybody in the hierarchy knows what to do,” says victims advocate Father Tom Doyle. “To them, spirituality is obedience to them and to liturgy. I don’t think they understand the damage, nor do they want to understand. They say, ‘Go back to the church. We’ll heal you on our terms.’ You’re asking people to go back to Auschwitz for dinner.”



FATHER CHARLES NEVER stood trial over his relationship with Arthur. At his sentencing hearing for theft, he denied giving drugs to Arthur, claimed they only had sex once (when Arthur was 18), and said the money he gave Arthur was to help pay gambling debts. But in his disjointed remarks, he never explained what happened to the $900,000 he stole. “You’re not telling the truth,” the judge responded. “I don’t even know if you’re admitting to yourself what you really have done.”

Upstairs in the Baselice house, Arthur’s bedroom has been faithfully preserved, like a museum display. His workout schedule and a pack of Marlboros sit on his nightstand. A football jersey hangs on his closet door. It gives Elaine Baselice some small comfort. She can’t bring herself to join Art when he stands in front of archdiocese headquarters with other survivors, holding his sign. This has become his crusade. He knows there are more victims. Arthur told Elaine he once walked in on Father Charles while he was molesting another boy, but refused to give up his fellow victim’s name.

With Father Charles in jail for three years, Art has tried to arrange a meeting with Brother Regis, who is still a Franciscan but restricted from service. “I want to know why he did what he did,” Art says. “Are you happy that my son is no longer with us?” But in September, Art was informed that it wouldn’t be in his best interest to meet with Brother Regis.

Art scours clergy abuse websites and jots down movie quotes about justice and revenge on index cards. If a priest walks into a restaurant where he’s eating, he’ll demand a table far away. Somewhere deeper inside, there’s also the anger he feels toward himself, for being
too clouded by faith to save his only son.

His wife sits on the living room floor, leafing through a binder filled with Arthur’s letters. Art walks over to the white urn bearing the boy’s name. “This is what I get to kiss and touch every day,” he says, his jaw beginning to tremble. “It’s not warm. I can’t smell his hair or his cologne. That’s what I got.”

Perhaps their only hope for healing lies in Arthur’s son, whom they see every week. At 14, he loves rock music and football, just like his dad. He’s still too young to understand what his father endured, or how he himself, just by being, may lead his grandparents to salvation in a way no priest or church ever will.

California is inundated with civil and criminal clergy sex abuse cases. I realized it was time for an update:

Inland Empire

Last week in Ontario, Fr. Alex Castillo was sentenced to a year in jail for lewd acts on a child. Although he was only prosecuted for his crimes against one victim, the sentencing report outlined the allegations of four other children (including the brother of the victim in the criminal case) who said that Castillo molested them.

The boy’s parents – as well as the other Castillo victims – were able to give victim impact statements at the sentencing. The scary part? In the sentencing report, Castillo’s probation officer says that the cleric has no understanding of the severity of his crimes.

Orange County

In Orange County, the civil trial against Gus Krumm, Alexander Manville and the Franciscans of Santa Barbara is scheduled to start later this week. The Diocese of Orange settled their part of the case in July for $200K (possibly to clean up matters for diocese’s $53 million offer for the Crystal Cathedral). Considering that Krumm was at Saints Simon and Jude Parish for five years after the Franciscans put him on restricted ministry (but didn’t tell anyone), I believe that this trial will expose a whole lot of ugly cover-up.

Orange County may also have the rare honor of hosting simultaneous criminal and civil clergy sex abuse trials. Former cleric Denis Lyons, who was arrested in 2009 on four felony counts of lewd acts upon a child under 14, should be sitting in the defendant’s chair within the next couple of weeks. Lyons is no stranger to trouble: he was arrested in 2003 for sex abuse (the charges were dropped as a result of the Stogner Decision). According to Bishop-Accountability.org, the Diocese of Orange has paid out at least $4 million in settlements to Lyons’ victims.

Los Angeles

In LA, the state of California is trying to classify former priest Michael Baker as a sexually violent predator. If they succeed, Baker, one of Los Angeles’ most prolific predator priests, can be incarcerated in a state hospital indefinitely. Additional civil cases against Baker are pending.

A civil case against former Los Angeles (via Italy and Columbia) priest Fernando Lopez-Lopez is heating up. A scathing investigation by Dan Rather Reports, All is Not Forgiven (scroll down to “Featured Stories”), showed that the Archdiocese of Los Angeles does no background checks on its priests. So, even though Lopez-Lopez had been convicted in Italy of sexual violence on a child, the only job reference that LA Archdiocese officials needed was a nice letter from Lopez-Lopez’s bishop (who, of course, knew about the conviction, but didn’t say anything).

LA Archdiocese officials had a chance to redeem themselves. But they didn’t. Even after church officials in Los Angeles learned about Lopez-Lopez’s past, they sat on the information for six months while Lopez-Lopez continued to abuse. Lopez-Lopez was deported to his home country of Columbia in 2008. He is reportedly still there.

Monterey

In the Diocese of Monterey, a new case has been filed against the diocese and William Allison, a priest who worked in the diocese in the 1960s and ’70s. Allison, who is deceased, was no stranger to trouble. The Diocese of Monterey, however, is playing coy. A diocese spokesman claimed that “it’s difficult” to find, investigate and search old clergy files, but a simple internet search will show that: 1) the Diocese of Fresno had no problem releasing Allison’s file as a part of a sex abuse civil case there, 2) There is an extensive amount of press on Allison’s time in New Mexico, and 3) The church’s own rules (Canon Law 489) require every diocese to keep permanent files on every abusive cleric, and that those files be ANNUALLY review by the bishop. But this is only the beginning of Monterey’s problems.

Monterey is also the home of accused cleric Edward Fitz-Henry, who has been sued for child sexual abuse by one boy (and accused by at least two). The Fitz-Henry case is disturbing on many levels. After the latest victim came forward, we discovered that there was at least one other accusation of abuse that was deemed “credible,” Fitz-Henry has spent time at a church-run facility that treats child-molesting clerics, and a visiting priest was removed for not reporting the victim’s allegations. Despite all of this, some parishioners at Fitz-Henry’s parish put up a disturbing website that maligns the victim and alienates whistleblowers. Yuck. Fortunately, a police investigation is continuing.

Bay Area – Fresno

The newest member of the California Clergy Sex Abuse Powder Keg is Fr. Don Flickinger. Flickinger worked in the Dioceses of Fresno and San Jose and the Archdiocese of San Francisco during his 40-year career as a priest. The sex abuse lawsuit, filed in San Francisco Superior Court, cites more than 15 witnesses who corroborate claims of Flickinger’s predatory behavior (including pulling freshman boys out of class and asking them about masturbation). When the lawsuit was filed, Flickinger was exposed living at an Archdiocese of San Francisco parish with a school. According to press reports, Flickinger is back in Fresno. Oddly, the Archdiocese of San Francisco and the Diocese of San Jose have put out statements denying all responsibility for Flickinger (note, Flickinger was listed in the 2011 Official Catholic Directory at St. Paul’s Parish in San Francisco and was listed on the website until the lawsuit was filed).

I am sure there are cases that I have overlooked. But I am always open to a Part 3.
